What to Expect from Flute Lessons
Each student has a different style of learning, so lessons and materials are catered to the individual student. Upon entry to my studio there is a strong emphasis on consistently nailing down flute basics including but not limited to: posture, body awareness, hand position, rhythm, pulse, embouchure and tonal control. Without good basics, advanced playing is not truly possible.
Lessons are structured with time for sight-reading duets, exercises for tone and technique, scales, etudes, basic theory, and solo/excerpt playing. In general, new concepts such as vibrato are often introduced as stand-alone exercises and gradually blended into every day playing after they are mastered. Careful attention and thought are given to how to practice, including techniques, routines, and approaches to problem solving. Flute lessons in my studio require an open mind and a willingness to try something new. Each student will be encouraged often to take risks and to work at expanding his or her comfort zone, as these moments are when true progress takes place.
A high level of preparation and effort is expected of all my flute students. In return, I will always reciprocate with thoroughness, thoughtful attention, enthusiastic encouragement, and great care to cover all details. Together, there is nothing we cannot achieve, but learning is a two way street. Each of us has to give an honest effort to the other. We will laugh, we will play, we will work, and we will achieve. Together.
