What I'm Looking for in a Student
- You want to practice (or if you don’t, you are creating strategies to do it anyway even when you don’t want to). This is mandatory.
- You are willing to practice all the music that is assigned to you, even if you don’t prefer some of it, such as scales or exercises.
- You are open to the discomfort of trying to do things differently. Without changing something, change in your playing cannot happen. You are learning to be OK with this discomfort and are starting to understand that a bad sounding result is sometimes a part of trying something new; that practice is about hovering on and near the places in the music where you are having difficulty.
What We Will Work Together to Develop
- Positive practice habits for greater success. We’ll talk about what you are doing, and how you are doing it. Together we will assess whether or not it’s working. I will give you numerous tools to keep in your mental “practice basket” to call upon as needed, and you will learn through trial and error which tools to use and when. You might even invent some of your own!
- A growth mindset. “This is challenging, and I am taking steps to master it” instead of “this is impossible; I’ll never be able to do this.
- A good playing position and embouchure formation. We are all different, so this may vary slightly from person to person. A well balanced holding position is the goal here, and finding the best embouchure placement to play well and in tune comes next
- Technique. Knowing scales and arpeggios is mandatory here. All of my students practice scales and technique, as they are part of the basic language of music. To be fluent in this language, we MUST know the vocabulary.
- Studies and repertoire. I am not a big fan of playing one solo (and no other exercises) over and over again for months. There will be something new to learn each week to stimulate your mind, your learning skills, and to help you stay focused. These new things may be alongside bigger solo projects that take longer to complete.
- Sight reading and ensemble skills through duet playing and reading through newly-assigned exercises together for the first time.
- The comfort with curiosity, experimentation, and asking questions about what you are learning.
My Teaching Style
- Friendly. Lessons are filled with humor and analogy
- Open minded to questions and new ideas/experimentation
- Encouraging. I believe everyone can learn and progress; we just need to find your personal key to progress
- Detailed. We focus on a lot of little things that, strung together, create bigger success
